SOUTH AUSTRALIA ¨C A BRILLIANT WINTER GETAWAY
26/04/2007
For the first time in several years, water has begun flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia 's Outback, creating a wildlife boom set to lure international tourists to the region.
Lake Eyre is normally a dry crust covering a vast expanse in South Australia 's Outback. When it does fill with water (only four times in every 100 years), an estimated 400 million tonnes of salt dissolves, making it ten times saltier than seawater.
The recent rains have transformed this dry area into an Outback oasis, teeming with native wildlife and wading birds such as Australian Pelicans, Silver Gulls, Red-necked Avocets, Banded Stilts and Gull-billed Terns, flocking in from as far away as north Queensland to breed and feed on the fish in the lake.
Tour operators in South Australia say an increasing number of visitors are interested to know if there is water in Lake Eyre and many of these operators are receiving increased bookings for sightseeing flights over the lake.
There has been a surge of interest from international tourists eager to witness the transformation of the desert and the burst of wildlife and winter provides the ideal weather conditions to explore this region.
Light aircraft flights offer visitors a convenient and comfortable way of appreciating the vastness of Lake Eyre and offer a perfect winter get-away.
In addition to the vast Outback, South Australia¡¯s many other diverse regions are also offering a brilliant blend of holiday experiences, making the State an ideal winter destination for international tourists.
From whale watching and diving with Southern Bluefin Tuna on the Eyre Peninsula, to the cultural attractions and galleries of Adelaide , and wine experiences of the world famous Barossa, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale wine regions, South Australia truly is a brilliant blend. With hundreds of cosy B&B¡¯s to enjoy, there is a winter holiday to suit everyone.
