Sydney most popular Xmas destination
19/12/2006
Sydney has come in first place on the list of the most popular Australian destinations for the Christmas holidays for 2006 taking the crown back from Melbourne according to a web survey by accommodation specialist wotif. While the traditional coastal destinations of the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, North Coast of New South Wales and Tropical North Queensland all appeared on the list, it appears that many Australians are opting for a city-based getaway this Christmas, with Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide placed as the second, fifth and sixth most popular destinations respectively.
Graeme Wood, chief executive officer and managing director said, ¡°While traditionally holidaymakers head to the coastal areas over Christmas, city hotels and apartments have lower than usual occupancy levels and, as a consequence, offer great deals that are snapped up by savvy consumers.
Although a trip across the Tasman to New Zealand once again dominated the international list with Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Rotorua and Wellington all appearing in the top ten, Asian destinations were just as popular with Singapore, Phuket, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok taking out the other half of the top ten spots.
The company¡¯s website lists the top ten destinations together with best available accommodation deals.
