World Tourism Day Celebrated in Nations near and far

Today marks the official recognition of World Tourism Day, a global highlight of the power of travel sanctioned by the United Nations¡¯ World Tourism Organization. The Travel Industry Association (TIA), based in Washington, D.C., is leading the country¡¯s participation in this international event.
¡°Tourism Enriches¡± is the worldwide theme and speaks to the many contributions and opportunities created by the $646 billion U.S. tourism industry.
Roger Dow, President and CEO of TIA, will join international tourism leaders in Lisbon, Portugal ¨C the site of World Tourism Day¡¯s official activities ¨C to represent the United States in the day¡¯s proceedings. In addition, TIA will speak on behalf of the U.S. travel industry at think tank sessions related to global tourism.
¡°Inviting more international visitors to the United States is a priority and an exciting opportunity for us, and World Tourism Day is another step in letting travelers know that America and the American people welcome their visit,¡± Dow said. ¡°Nationwide, cities and states are greatly impacted by the economic, social and cultural benefits of travel.¡±
